The topper consists of a grate with rows of small holes, an open chimney in the centre and a ring that rests on the bowl. A black handle sits on the side, so you can lift or shift the whole thing. How does a hot screen with a chimney work?

You place your glowing coals on the grate, around the chimney. The heat passes through the holes to the bowl, while the chimney in the centre lets air through and carries off part of the heat. That way you need no foil and spread the warmth more evenly over your bowl. With the handle you briefly lift the topper to check the ash or adjust the bowl.
