Handy for a balcony in The Hague

A hookah and the gear that makes the difference when it is windy: coals that burn long, an HMD and a hose that can handle outdoor use.

Smoking in the wind

Why coals burn out faster by the sea

The Hague lies on the sea, and anyone setting up a hookah on a balcony in Scheveningen, Duindorp or Kijkduin notices it. Wind blows extra oxygen past the coals: they glow brighter, get hotter and are used up sooner. Three ways to deal with that:

An HMD instead of foil

On foil the coals lie fully exposed. A heat management device (HMD) covers them and spreads the heat over the bowl; on many models a slider or lid lets you set how hot it gets. The difference is explained in HMD or foil.

Coconut coals instead of quick-light

Quick-light coals burn for 30 to 40 minutes, coconut coals for 60 to 90. In the wind that difference counts even more. More in coconut coals or quick-light coals.

Out of the wind

A corner of the balcony, a wall in the garden or a chair with its back to the wind: the less draught across the bowl, the longer the same coals last.

Popular hookahs

A selection from the best-selling models. Open a product for the height, the base and what comes with it as standard.

No lighter in the wind

Can a hookah run on electricity?

If you live on the coast, you may wonder whether it can be done without coals. A hookah that runs entirely on electricity does not exist as a product: the bowl needs glowing coal. What can be electric is the lighting. An electric coal burner in the kitchen heats the coals, so you are not fumbling with a lighter in the wind outside.

Which other parts do and do not run on electricity is covered in this overview of the electric hookah.

Natural coals that burn long

Coconut and other natural coals in different sizes. Cubes of 25 and 26 millimeters are the most common; bigger ones burn longer, but also give more heat.

Considering the neighbours

Shisha on the balcony: smoke, wind and neighbours

In a walk-up flat or a row of upstairs apartments you share the facade with your neighbours. Where the smoke goes is decided by the wind, and on the coast it often blows hard. A few habits prevent trouble:

Check where the wind is going

Place the hookah so the smoke blows away from the facade and not past the neighbours' open windows. If it blows straight at their windows, pick another spot or another moment.

Nothing over the railing

Never throw ash or coals over the balcony edge: in the wind, sparks fly in every direction. Let them cool down in a fireproof dish or carry them inside in a coal carrier.

Agree on it

A quick word with the neighbours about regular evenings prevents more irritation than any accessory.

Care on the coast

After an evening outside: moisture and sand out of your hookah

After a session on a balcony in Scheveningen or Kijkduin there is more in your hookah than just water. Damp air and blowing sand make care a little more important than indoors:

Check the grommets

One grain of sand between the grommet and the base is enough for false air. Wipe the grommets clean before you put the stem back.

Water out straight away

Pour the water out as soon as the session is over, rinse the base and bowl and let everything dry separately. It takes a few minutes and saves most of the work later.

No washing-up liquid

Washing-up liquid leaves a film that you taste the next time. Warm water and a brush do the job. How often and how thoroughly is explained in cleaning a hookah.

Hoses

A hose that can handle outdoor use

Outdoors you use a hookah differently than indoors: it gets moved more often, the hose ends up on the ground now and then and moisture gets in. That makes the choice of hose more important than you might think.

Washable

A silicone hose gets rinsed through with lukewarm water after the session and hung up to dry. That way it is fresh again even after a damp evening.

Not washable

A hose with a fabric or leather outer layer must not get wet. Store it dry and dark, and keep it indoors when it rains.

Length

A longer hose gives you freedom of movement, so the hookah can stand out of the wind while you sit wherever you like. Watch out for kinks.

When does my order arrive in The Hague?

Place your order on a working day before 18:00 and we ship it the same day; the carrier delivers it the next working day. Whatever you order at the weekend goes on its way on the next working day.

What does shipping to The Hague cost?

Under EUR 20 you pay EUR 6.95, from EUR 20 it is EUR 4.95 and from EUR 89.99 we deliver for free. You see the amount in your cart before you check out.

Do you have a shop in The Hague?

No. Our two shops are in Almere and at De Bazaar in Beverwijk. For The Hague we work with home delivery only.

How do I use a hookah when it is very windy?

Put the hookah out of the wind, place an HMD on the bowl instead of foil and choose coconut coals, which burn longer and more evenly. If it still gets too hot, take one coal off or close the slider on your HMD further if it has one.

Can a hookah hose go under the tap?

A silicone hose can: rinse it through with lukewarm water and let it drain. A hose with a fabric or leather outer layer cannot; keep that one dry.

Do you deliver a ready-made shisha in The Hague?

No. We send hookahs, coals and accessories by post; we do not supply a filled shisha that is ready to smoke. Whatever you order, you put together yourself at home.

Can I order in English?

Yes. You are on the English version of the shop; you can switch language with the selector at the top of the page. Not every product description has been translated yet.

Do you also deliver in Rijswijk, Delft and Zoetermeer?

Yes, we deliver all over the Netherlands on the same terms. Rijswijk, Delft, Leidschendam-Voorburg, Wassenaar and Zoetermeer get their order just as fast as The Hague itself.
