Which hookah suits an Amsterdam home?

Amsterdam lives small. A top-floor flat in De Pijp, a studio in Nieuw-West, an apartment with a balcony a metre and a half deep: that asks something different of a hookah than a garden in the suburbs does. Three things matter most in practice:

Height and footprint

A shisha of 70 cm or taller looks impressive, but it is awkward to move and to store. For a small living room or a narrow balcony, a model between 45 and 65 cm usually works better: stable enough not to topple, small enough to fit in a cupboard.

Smell and neighbours

In a stacked building the real issue is smell, not smoke. A closed chamber and a well-sealing base keep the vapour inside the system until you actually draw on it. If you smoke on the balcony or by an open window, pick a model you can carry easily. That helps more than any accessory.

Cleaning without a garden

With no outdoor tap, cleaning becomes a kitchen-sink job. A stem you can take apart and a base with a wide neck make all the difference: you rinse those out under the tap instead of wrestling a brush down a narrow bottle.

  • The hookah: stem, base and hose. Check whether the hose is included.
  • A bowl: stone, clay or glass. Some sets already come with one.
  • Coals: natural coconut coals burn longer and taste cleaner than easy light.
  • A coal burner: an electric hob will not get coals properly lit.
  • Foil or a hot screen: a hot screen is reusable and saves you poking holes in foil.
  • Mouthpieces: worth it as soon as you smoke with other people.

The range is built around a handful of brands that hold up in daily use. Briefly, what each stands for, so you are not buying blind:

Hookahs

Amy Deluxe is the German workhorse: cleanly finished, plenty of models, parts that fit properly. DUM comes from the same corner of the market and often sits at a sharper price. Khalil Mamoon is the classic Egyptian build, heavier and more traditional, with a character of its own. Oduman makes the modern glass models for anyone who wants something that doubles as a design object.

Flavours

Our flavours are nicotine-free. Shi-Ha and Drizzy Elements deliberately track the familiar flavour profiles, while Paradise and Bigg Ice Rockz use steam stones instead of tobacco. If you are ordering for the first time, try two or three flavours before committing to a kilo.

Coals

Tom Cococha and Black Coco's are natural coconut coals: longer burning and more neutral in taste than easy light.

Maintenance

How to keep your hookah in good shape

The difference between a shisha that lasts three years and one that tastes stale after six months is almost entirely maintenance. Three habits:

Rinse straight after the session

Pour the water out while the pipe is still warm and rinse the stem through with lukewarm water. Once residue dries in, only a brush will shift it.

No washing-up liquid in the base

Soap residue stays behind in the glass and you taste it during the next session. Warm water and a bottle brush are enough; for stubborn build-up, a splash of vinegar beats soap.

Store the hose dry

A washable silicone hose gets rinsed through and hung up to dry. A non-washable hose gets exactly the opposite treatment: leave it alone and replace it once it starts giving off flavour.

Since the Dutch online flavour ban of 1 July 2023, hookah tobacco containing nicotine may no longer be sold through a webshop. Our online range is therefore entirely nicotine-free: brands such as Shi-Ha, Drizzy Elements and Paradise deliver the same flavour profiles without the nicotine. Everything you order on this site can simply be shipped to you, in Amsterdam as anywhere else.

Smoking in bars and cafes

Dutch hospitality venues fall under a smoking ban, and shisha lounges are included. Almost all hookah smoking therefore happens at home, which is exactly what we supply.

Ventilation and safety

Coals give off carbon monoxide. Never smoke in a fully sealed room: open a window or sit on the balcony. Let coals burn out in a fireproof dish rather than dropping them in the bin, which is the most common mistake made in an apartment.

Can I buy in the shop what I see online?

Which hookah works in a small apartment?

In practice a model between 45 and 65 cm with a closed chamber works best: stable, easy to carry out to the balcony and simple to store in a cupboard. If you are torn between two models, send us a message.

What else do I need besides the hookah itself?

At minimum a bowl, coals, a coal burner and either foil or a hot screen. Mouthpieces are worth having if you smoke with others. Our complete sets already cover most of that.
