Setting up

Setting up your first hookah, step by step

The first time takes a quarter of an hour, after that five minutes. In this order it goes well:

  • Fill the base: water to roughly two centimetres above the end of the stem. More water makes the draw heavy, less lets smoke slip past the water.
  • Fit the stem: make sure the rubber or silicone grommet seals properly, otherwise you are drawing air instead of smoke.
  • Pack the bowl: fill loosely to just below the rim, do not press it down. Compacted tobacco burns instead of vaporising.
  • Foil or hot screen: pull the foil tight and prick holes, or lay a hot screen on top. A hot screen saves the fiddling and lasts years.
  • Light the coals: eight to ten minutes on the burner until they are grey all over. Black edges mean carbon monoxide and a harsh taste.
  • Warm it through: put the coals on, wait two minutes, then draw. Starting immediately scorches the top layer.
  • Adjust: too little smoke usually means one more coal; too harsh means one less, or move them to the edge.

What we may and may not sell online

On 1 July 2023, hookah tobacco containing nicotine disappeared from Dutch webshops. That ban covers online sales and we stick to it: everything you order on this site is nicotine-free. In practice you notice little of it, because brands like Shi-Ha, Drizzy Elements, Paradise and Bigg Ice Rockz build the same flavour profiles without nicotine.

Steam stones or nicotine-free tobacco

Two routes to the same result. Steam stones are small pebbles that hold the flavourings and release them under heat. Nicotine-free hookah tobacco resembles the classic kind in cut and behaviour. If you are used to a particular blend, the second usually lands closer to home.

Smoking happens at home

Dutch hospitality venues fall under the smoking ban, shisha lounges included. The overwhelming majority of hookah smoking therefore happens in your own living room or garden, and that is what our range is built around.

Coals

Coals and a burner: where it usually goes wrong

Nine times out of ten, a disappointing session is not the tobacco or the pipe but the coals. Three things that decide it:

Natural coals or easy light

Easy light coals catch from a lighter and that is their only merit. They carry an ignition layer you taste for the first few minutes. Natural coconut coals need a burner, last far longer and add no flavour of their own. For home use they are almost always the better choice.

The right size for your bowl

Coals of 25 or 26 mm fit most standard bowls. Move to 27 or 28 mm and you get more heat per coal, so you need fewer, but on a small bowl that becomes too hot. Not sure what your bowl wants? Bring it along to the shop.

A burner, not a hob

An induction or ceramic hob will not get coconut coals properly lit. A separate coal burner of 600 to 1000 watts needs eight to ten minutes and does the job. Gas works outdoors; indoors, electric is more pleasant.

No. Webshop orders are shipped; collection is not offered at checkout. In the shop you buy and pay on the spot and take home whatever is in stock.

Do you deliver within Almere itself?

Our online range is nicotine-free. Since 1 July 2023, hookah tobacco with nicotine may no longer be sold through a webshop. Brands such as Shi-Ha, Drizzy Elements and Paradise deliver the same flavour profiles without it.

I am new to this. What is the minimum I need?

A hookah with a hose, a bowl, natural coals, a coal burner, and either foil or a hot screen. Mouthpieces are worth adding as soon as you smoke with other people. Our complete sets already cover most of that.
