Coals for your shisha: quick-light or coconut in a student room?

The coals decide more than you think about how an evening goes. In a room without a coal burner you have two routes:

Quick-light coals

They glow within a minute with a lighter, without a burner. They burn for 30 to 40 minutes and give the first puffs a slight chemical taste. Handy if you only set up a hookah now and then.

Coconut coals

They burn for 60 to 90 minutes without any aftertaste, but need a coal burner. If you set up a hookah more often, a burner is a logical purchase.

Lighting safely

Put a coal burner on a heat-resistant, stable surface in a well-ventilated room, and never leave it switched on unattended. All the differences between the two types are in coconut coals or quick-light coals.

Sharing a hookah without the hassle

A hookah in a student house rarely belongs to one person. A few agreements prevent trouble:

  • Your own mouthpiece: a hygienic mouthpiece or disposable tip per person, so nobody puts their mouth on the same piece.
  • Cleaning up afterwards: water out, base rinsed and the parts left to dry separately; whoever smokes last cleans up.
  • A fixed spot: agree where the hookah can and cannot stand, and keep in mind housemates who are bothered by it.
  • The rental contract: some landlords ban smoking indoors; check what your contract or house rules say.
