Cleaning a hookah: how often and how thoroughly

Cleaning a hookah is the part of the hobby nobody talks about and where almost everyone loses their flavor. A session that was fresh last month turns dull, and the reflex is to go buy a different shisha flavor. Usually it is not the flavor.

Below is what actually needs doing and what is overkill, split into what you do after every session and what can wait a week. With the brushes you need for it, and the parts you have to keep dry.

Why a dirty hookah gives less flavor

Smoking releases more from the tobacco than smoke. Glycerine, sugars and flavorings settle on every surface the smoke passes: the inside of the bowl, the channel in the plate, the whole stem and the wall of the base.

Fresh, that layer is invisible. After ten sessions or so it is brown, sticky and smells of everything you have ever smoked in it at once. From that point on you are smoking through your own history. The fresh flavor still comes through, but with an edge to it that does not belong.

What residue is and where it collects

Anyone who has seen a German package knows the word schmand: the solid, sticky layer that sets inside the stem. It does not build up evenly. The worst spots are the inside of the stem just below the plate, where the smoke is still warm, and the bottom section that hangs in the water.

That is exactly why changing the water is not enough on its own. The water in the base looks dirty after a session and it is, but it rinses away. The layer in the stem stays and grows. If cleaning a hookah means pouring out the water for you, you are tidying up the visible part and leaving the real problem standing.

After every session: the quarter hour that pays off most

The most important round is the smallest. Five to ten minutes, straight after, while everything is still warm and wet and the residue has not hardened.

Pour the water out, rinse the base twice with cold or lukewarm water and stand it upside down to drain. Take the bowl off, throw the remains away and rinse it while it is still lukewarm. Wait until tomorrow and the caramelized sugar has set, and you need a brush for something that comes off with your thumb now.

Then flush the stem with warm tap water and let the parts dry separated from each other. That last step gets skipped most often and costs the least effort. A hookah put away wet and assembled smells musty the next day, and that smell only comes out with a thorough round.

Once a week: stem, base and plate

Every ten sessions, or simply once a week if you smoke often, the hookah comes apart and the brush joins in. Count on half an hour, drying included.

Take it all apart: base, stem, plate, bowl, hose and mouthpiece. Fill the base halfway with warm water and work the whole inner wall with a wide base brush, including the bulge at the bottom most people never reach. Use a long thin brush for the stem and push it all the way through several times, not halfway. The residue sits precisely on the part you cannot see.

Why dish soap ruins the flavor

Here is the mistake made most often. Dish soap is designed to leave a thin layer behind that repels grease, and that layer does not rinse out of a narrow stem or the bulge of a base. The next session you taste it back as a soapy aftertaste that will not go away.

When cleaning a hookah, mechanical beats chemical. Warm water and a brush with enough resistance take the layer off. If something stays put, use a cleaner made for hookahs and rinse twice afterwards with clean water.

Warm water yes, boiling water no

Warm water dissolves the sugar layer more gently than cold. Boiling water is another story. A glass base that has just had cold water and then takes a jet of boiling water can crack from the temperature jump. On a stem with glued or pressed parts, hot water can lift paint or coating.

Tap water on the warm setting is warm enough. If you want it faster, leave the parts in warm water with some cleaning powder for half an hour and brush afterwards. That works better than scrubbing harder.

Which brush you need for what

There are three and they genuinely do different jobs. A set covers them in one go, and separately they run between 5.99 and 20.99 euro with us.

The wide, flared brush is for the base. It has to be wider than the neck, because otherwise you never reach the wall. The long thin brush on a twisted steel wire is for the stem, and it has to be longer than the stem itself. For a model over sixty centimetres you need an XL version, otherwise you never reach the bottom section.

A brush with a wooden handle and a steel wire core lasts years, provided you rinse it after use and let it dry. A wet brush in a drawer is the dirtiest item in the set within a month.

The parts you must not get wet

Not everything goes under the tap, and this is where expensive parts break.

A leather or fabric-wrapped hose must never be flushed through. Inside there is often a metal spiral that rusts, and the leather or wrapping never dries through again. Those hoses you keep dry and replace when they start to smell. Silicone hoses are fine, they are made for it. Untreated aluminium and the dishwasher do not go together either. It turns dull, gets white spots, and that does not come back. Clay bowls absorb moisture and flavor: rinse those with water and no cleaner and let them dry completely, otherwise you get a mouldy smell. And never leave anything with a wooden handle sitting in water.

Cleaner or just water

For the weekly round, warm water and a brush are enough. A cleaner earns its place when it has been a while, or when you have a model you cannot reach everywhere with a brush.

There are two kinds. A cleaning powder dissolves in the base or in a bucket, you leave it half an hour and brush afterwards. Household remedies work too, but not all of them. Soda or citric acid in warm water does its job on sugar residue. Rice or salt as an abrasive in the base is a classic you are better off skipping: it scratches glass you will never get properly clear again, and it scrubs away nothing a brush does not also reach.

How often is often enough

There is no fixed schedule that fits everyone, because it depends on how often you smoke and on what. A few guidelines that hold up in practice.

Smoke once or twice a week and rinsing after every session plus a thorough round once a month is enough. Smoke a few times a week and you want that thorough round every ten sessions. Smoke with a lot of people or with heavily spiced tobacco and you notice it sooner, so you go to once a week.

The real signal is the flavor. If the first draw of a fresh bowl is already dull, or the base still smells of the previous flavor after you rinsed it, the stem is due.
